Chapter 16

She tasted glorious. Like sunflowers and sin. Rich and deep and delicious. He never wanted to stop. Heron could feel his body healing, her blood spreading through his veins, bringing a flush to his skin, a warmth to his limbs. It was helping his body fight the poison faster than he expected. Almost as if her blood itself was magic. He could feel life and strength returning to him.

He wanted more. He wanted everything, he wanted to plunge his fangs even deeper and take everything she had.

But he couldn't. She'd die and it would be his fault. He'd be the monster she saw him as. The monster that had to be kept back with spells and wards, that had to be forced into helping her, instead of jumping to it the moment he saw she was in need. The monster he really, truly was, deep inside.

Heron's hands trembled on the little witch's form. Would she stop him? Would she blast him away from her in an outpouring of magic just like when she'd taken down the barrier?

He'd seen her, a vision on the hilltop, rimed in fire. The barrier had held him, but that wasn't why he'd stilled. He'd been paralyzed by the sight of her. Already on his knees, he'd wanted to prostate himself before her, worship her.

She was strength and beauty and fire and everything that was missing in his life. He needed her like a human needed air.

Was this the death he was looking for? Killed in righteous fury by a witch at her full strength?

Her heartbeat jumped and Heron realized he was on the edge of too much. If he continued, he'd drain her. Ruining the innocence, the kindness in the way she'd trustingly offered her neck.

Heron drew his fangs from her skin. It was the hardest thing he'd ever done. He stayed there for a moment, still reeling with the taste, the magic of her blood. His lips on her neck.

He wanted her. He wanted her in every way.

Heron finally pulled back and looked down at her, imagining her fiery eyes pushing him away, but the woman that stared up at him was a creature transformed. Her eyes, half-lidded, were hazy with lust. Her body, relaxed and loose in his arms, invited him in.

Even the night air around them seemed sweeter, warmer, the moonlight almost golden.

Something was happening between them, something he didn't understand, an intersection of magic, blood and desire.

He wanted to bite her again. It was more than want. He needed it. He needed the taste of her in his mouth, he needed the feel of her body under him. He was painfully hard. Desperate.

Heron didn't know where he dragged the last shreds of his control from, but somehow, he managed to stop himself from taking everything he wanted. His wounds were still bleeding sluggishly and he focused instead on them, on the pain, on the itch of the poison, and used that to drag himself away from the edge.

The chill in the air finally registered and he realized how cold she had to be.
